Welcome from the Head of the School of Informatics

I’m delighted that you have shown an interest in the Director of our new Generative AI Laboratory (GAIL); I look forward to engaging further with you in exploring the opportunities offered by the role.

GAIL is a bold new multi-million pound initiative that will push the forefront of generative AI to benefit society and stimulate economic growth that has been launched at the University of Edinburgh. GAIL builds on world-class research in AI and machine learning, which has been applied to a variety of fields such as healthcare, fintech and sustainability. Once operational, GAIL will create a new pipeline of talent with the skills to both benefit from and shape the economic and societal benefits of this transformational technology.

The Director will provide essential leadership to leverage the University and School’s existing research strengths to build an international and world-leading community of excellence in Generative AI. We are looking for someone to spearhead and shape the development of this exciting new initiative, support researchers at the start of their careers to tackle major AI challenges, and link researchers across disciplines within the University.

The School of Informatics is a world-class centre for computer science and informatics research and education and is the leading institution in its field in the United Kingdom. We are one of Europe’s largest Informatics groupings, with national and international leadership in fields such as robotics, machine learning, natural language processing, systems and architecture, quantum computing, and theoretical computer science. The academics and professional services staff in the School have tremendous expertise and commitment and you’ll work closely with them to shape the next phase of the School’s development.
