Principal Lead

Principal Lead – National Leadership Development Programme
£60,730 to £65,377 per annum
Flexible Location:

NHS Education for Scotland is a national health board which promotes best practice in the education and lifelong learning of all Healthcare, social work and social care staff in Scotland, including management and executive level team members. The mission of NES is to contribute to the highest quality of health & social care throughout Scotland, ensuring the 350,000 people working in health and social care roles are well trained and are continually developed through each stage of their career.

NES is the key delivery partner for the new National Leadership Development Programme (NLDP); this programme is being developed to create empowering, inspirational leaders who understand that people are our strongest asset for delivering positive change. The programme will focus on the development of leaders at all levels, the identification of talent, leadership succession planning, and support current senior leaders in their own development needs. This programme will work across the entire health, social work and social care workforce of Scotland.

The Principal Lead role will be responsible for the design, development, delivery and evaluation of a range of leadership and talent management interventions at senior and executive level as commissioned through the NLDP and building on current national leadership development workstreams delivered for the health workforce.

If you were in this role today, here are some of the things you would be doing:

  • Building positive collaborative working relationships with key strategic partners in NES, Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and all sectors of social work and social care
  • Leading the design, delivery, commissioning and impact evaluation of flexible leadership development programmes and resources that are evidence based and have real impact in terms of participant development and performance
  • Developing and delivering effective talent management and succession planning processes that support the identification, development, retention and deployment of high potential individuals and enable them to reach senior strategic leadership roles across the health and social care system;
  • Engaging with and facilitate leadership networks and communities across the health and social care system that support participation in leadership development and talent management activities at all levels and encourages greater diversity and inclusion.
  • Evaluating and assessing impact of leadership and talent management activities and provide assurance to senior stakeholders within NES and external governance groups.

Some of the knowledge, skills and experience you might have:

  • You’ll have significant experience of working with executive and senior leaders in complex environments.
  • You’ll have experience in the development and delivery of a range of leadership development interventions with senior leaders
  • You will have the knowledge and skills to undertake quality assurance and impact assessment of development interventions
  • You will be experienced in working collaboratively across a complex stakeholder environment and will have a good understanding of the health, social work and social care environment.
  • You’ll have an excellent understanding and experience of applying contemporary theories of Leadership Development
  • You will be able to facilitate ongoing learning for others through live work, for example via Action Learning Sets, Team Coaching, Peer Thinking Groups.
  • You will be a qualified coach and have experience of coaching senior leaders
