People, Safety and Governance Director
Salary: £80,000 – £90,000
Location: Glasgow or Flexible

Scottish Canals are fundamental in delivering inclusive growth and economic success across the breadth of the canals in Scotland. Having recently become a Non-Departmental Public Body, they conserve canals as part of our heritage and transform them to play a vital role in Scotland today.

Scotland’s canals have a proud and rich history, having contributed to the country’s economy for over 200 years. Whilst the goods and people they once transported powered the industrial revolution, today the canals drive transformational change, through investment in regeneration and tourism, helping to tackle global issues such as health inequality and climate change. Having enjoyed a renaissance over the last few years, we are now adopting and using these working heritage assets for 21st century purposes; reimagining the ways we value, protect and enjoy our canal corridors.

Scottish Canals is now looking to appoint a new People, Safety and Governance Director, to join their Executive Team and to deliver upon their priorities while managing a period of change over the next few years. You will be involved in all corporate decision-making, holding budgetary responsibility for circa £1.5 million.

You will have a track record in change management and experience of leading and developing high performing teams in a strategic and innovative way. You must ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and implement best practices to maximise value to Scottish Canals.

As a senior advisor to the Accountable Officer, you will oversee and advise on all aspects of People, Safety and Governance. You will contribute to the collective leadership of the Scottish Canals portfolio, having positive influence with stakeholders internally and externally.

The successful individual should be solutions driven, with significant experience of operating in a complex organisation and possess a high level of technical and managerial expertise. You should hold a recognised professional qualification for either People (CIPD Chartered and/or Fellow Membership), H&S (NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and a member of the institution of Occupational Safety and Health with Chartered status) or Governance (legal background is desirable). Extensive experienced, in the absence of these qualifications may be considered if you can demonstrate operating at an appropriate level

The role can be based in their offices in Glasgow or flexibly anywhere in Scotland, with travel required.
