Historic Environment Scotland is Scotland’s national heritage agency, a charity dedicated to protecting Scotland’s places and sustaining the historic environment and its benefits for future generations. They are at the forefront of researching and understanding the historic environment and addressing the impact of climate change on its future. They investigate and record architectural and archaeological sites and landscapes across Scotland, look after internationally significant collections and archives and protect our places and promote sustainable development through designation, consents and their role as part of the planning system.

Edinburgh Castle is a core element of Scotland’s heritage and identity; a site of global significance that helps set Edinburgh and Scotland apart from other cities and nations. It is also a fundamental component of the wider Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site (WHS). It is one of the UK’s leading paid entry visitor attractions, attracting over two million visitors annually. Its commercial success contributes to the conservation of Scotland’s wider historic environment. Work is now required to shape the future direction of the Castle through the development and implementation of a Masterplan.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders both within HES and their partner organisations to lead in the development and implementation of an ambitious, long term masterplan for Edinburgh Castle. You will represent the Masterplan externally to HES including with stakeholders and media at a strategic level. As such, you will oversee the procurement and management of the master-planners / consultants, bringing together third parties with a range of perspectives and gaining consensus on the final Plan and implementation. Working in partnership with the HES Board Chair and Chief Executive, you will establish and manage a Steering Group and Project Board.

Degree qualified and with the relevant project / programme management qualification you will have an excellent track record of delivering significant high-profile programmes or projects. You will have a proven ability to building strong and trusted relationships at a senior level as well as managing external consultants. You will share the organisation’s passion, understanding and vision to deliver a world leading visitor experience at Edinburgh Castle.
