Scottish Canals is the operating name of the British Waterways Board and has operated as a standalone public body in Scotland since July 2012. Their principal activities are currently focused on leisure and tourism, along with a diverse mix of other economic regeneration initiatives within the canal corridors. Many of their activities are commercial in nature, generating much needed income to fund the maintenance and renewal of canal infrastructure the cost of which is currently subsidised by the Scottish Government. Increasingly they are operating with and through the third sector, reflecting the fundamental public interest purpose of their work.

The position of Chief Executive at Scottish Canals is a unique one within the Scottish business environment. It combines elements of social entrepreneur with those of public sector leader. It is a high-profile role with ample opportunity for the right person to excel and be seen to do so. Scottish Canals is far from being a mature organisation, and the board is firmly of the view that the renaissance of recent years is only the beginning of a much longer-term pathway.

The role requires significant risk management expertise, including in relation to infrastructure asset management, finance and political uncertainty. Above all the role is about being a champion of continuous innovation, change, improvement and empowerment across the organisation and beyond. It involves inspiring others and securing the motivation, loyalty and support of both employees and partners. It is very much a leadership role in the entrepreneurial sense of that word; this therefore is a dynamic opportunity for a remarkable individual to challenge, enhance and drive strategic initiatives.

Appointment on a seconded basis would be considered, with a minimum of a 3 year commitment.
