Inspiring learning, research and innovation in Scotland

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) is helping make Scotland the best place in the world to learn, educate, research and innovate. Investing around £1.8 billion of public money each year, SFC’s funding enables Scotland’s colleges and universities to provide life-changing opportunities for over half a million people.  Our support for university research means every one of Scotland’s 19 universities is able to carry out world-leading research. Our funding to support innovation from Scotland’s universities and colleges is helping solve some of the big challenges facing our economy and society – today and in the future. Our work in widening access is bringing colleges and universities together in new ways and providing more people with more routes into learning and skills.

Our aim as an organisation is to be an innovative, effective public body capable of leading, investing in and delivering ambitious change in support of Scottish Government priorities for wellbeing and inclusive economic growth.

In a changing economic and political environment, the position of Chief Executive at the Scottish Funding Council is a unique role in Scotland and we are seeking an outstanding individual to become the Scottish Funding Council’s next Chief Executive Officer.

We are looking for someone to provide strategic and operational leadership to drive the implementation of SFC’s long-term objectives in relation to education and learning, enterprise and skills, research, innovation and creativity.  The Chief Executive will lead SFC’s work with colleges and universities to sustain and develop a coherent and connected system of world-class further and higher education for Scotland.  Together with Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland and the South of Scotland Economic Partnership, the Chief Executive will be expected to cooperate with and contribute to the effective delivery of the key aims of the Enterprise and Skills Strategic Board, of which these bodies’ Chairs are members.

You must be able to demonstrate an ability to lead, inspire, manage and develop a dedicated and diverse workforce. A track record of success in building a fair, inclusive and continuous improvement culture will be important.

You will be a clear strategic thinker who is action-orientated with the ability to create and foster successful partnerships.  You will have a track record of delivering innovation and change in a complex and dynamic environment.  You will also bring to the role sound political acumen, and experience of liaising with and influencing government at a strategic level, as well as managing an organisation with substantial responsibility for budget.
