Light Up Learning is a registered charity that delivers one-on-one student-led learning for secondary school students in Edinburgh and the Lothians who have or are experiencing disadvantage. The programme has successfully partnered with Lasswade High School since February 2015 and Castlebrae High School since October 2018, supporting a total of 55 young people to date.

One of our strategic objectives is to expand this to 260 young people by June 2022. Our programme of student-led learning is designed to ignite a love of learning in young people that expands their confidence, experiences and choices for the future, both in school and beyond. We create low-stress, supportive, and playful learning environments and place each student in charge of their own learning, giving them the resources, skills and contacts need to explore and connect with what inspires them.

With our 2019-22 strategic plan in place, we’re now seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees who can work with us to expand our reach and impact to more young people.

We are seeking an individual who is –

  • A proven leader with experience navigating change and transformation.
  • Has a strong understanding of governance and compliance structures.
  • Has a demonstrable passion for and belief in the work that we do
  • Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Has a proven ability to build and maintain strong and productive relationships
  • Is committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity at all levels

No prior experience as a Chair is required, however prior experience on a board is necessary. There are four Board meetings per year (in Edinburgh) as well as four remote calls in between meetings. The Chair is expected to be available for some charity, network and fundraiser events on an ad hoc basis.
