About the Institute of Chartered Foresters

The Institute of Chartered Foresters is the Royal Chartered body for tree professionals in the UK. We are the only organisation with the ability to offer the titles of Chartered Forester and Chartered Arboriculturist.

Our vision is for chartered status to be the goal for all tree professionals. Our standards set the benchmark for the sector, with members sought after for their advice and expertise. Integrity, excellence, collaboration, sustainability and transparency form the basis on which we operate and underpin our strategic objectives. Members of the Institute are required to uphold the integrity and reputation of the forestry profession and safeguard the public interest in matters of health and safety. They are bound by our Code of Conduct – chartered status recognises professional competence and adherence to this Code.

Nearly a century after our establishment, the Institute provides platforms for professional learning and collaboration on the latest research, news and developments facing the sector. The Institute works with both industry and educational institutions to promote tree-based careers to young people and career-changers, in order to ensure the continued growth of this dynamic sector. Our new #NurtureGrowThrive membership recruitment campaign aims to help address the ongoing skills shortage in the sector – a continued focus of our work, alongside fostering greater public awareness and understanding of forestry in order to achieve a variety of commercial, recreational, environmental and scientific interests.

We now have more than 2,000 members from across the private and public sectors, central and local government, non-government organisations, charities and universities. Our members undertake a wide variety of roles – urban foresters, land agents, research scientists, academics, harvesting and marketing professionals, woodland managers, and more.
