Head of Department and Professor of Computer and Information Sciences
Glasgow
Competitive salary
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in this senior appointment within the Faculty of Science at the University of Strathclyde.
Strathclyde is a leading international technological university which is recognised for its strong research links with industry, business and the public sector, commitment to enterprise and knowledge exchange, and the development of skills and knowledge fit for the challenges of the 21st century.
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde is a vibrant and ambitious Department with a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching and a growing knowledge exchange portfolio. Over the last five years, through a combination of innovative new degree programme offerings and sustained investment in staff the Department has doubled in size across most areas of activity.
We have launched two successful research groups in AI and Cybersecurity, complementing existing groupings in Information Sciences and Behaviours (iSchool), Mathematically Structured Programming and Digital Health and Wellbeing: the growing strength of our research is validated by the recent REF result where we advanced 19 places in overall ranking to 34th.
Burgeoning student recruitment has seen all student cohorts grow significantly, especially PGT where the cohort now exceeds 400 students. We also run innovative Graduate and Degree Apprenticeships, at both UG and PGT level, where employers enrol their staff to take our degrees. Our teaching quality is recognised both by NSS (recent results of 5th, 8th and 13th across the UK) and OFSTED.
We are looking for a proven academic leader, who has the ability to build upon outstanding research-intensive activity, to create sustained research excellence in the future, to develop our knowledge exchange activities post-covid, to enhance the quality, attractiveness and inclusivity of our teaching, and to more broadly, use the ubiquitous nature of Computer and Information Sciences to drive forward University activity. The post is open-ended, and the successful candidate will hold the position of Head of Department for three years from the date of appointment; it is expected that half their time will be taken up by Head of Department duties. Thereafter, assuming no re-appointment as Head of Department, they will carry out the role of Professor within the Department.
I hope you will be excited by the opportunity above and to join a vibrant and collaborative Science Faculty. If so, please contact me for informal discussions.
Best wishes
Prof Duncan Graham FRSE
Associate Principal & Executive Dean of Science
The Role
As a research intensive Department, we have an international reputation for high quality research, spanning the whole spectrum of theory and application from fundamental algorithms and programming language design to human-centred computing and information sciences. The Department has excellent research and teaching facilities.
We are looking to appoint an internationally recognised academic leader with a substantial track record in teaching, research and knowledge exchange. You will be expected to provide academic and motivational leadership to enable the Department of Computer & Information Sciences to take forward its portfolio of research and knowledge exchange activity, its leading teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to enhance the Department’s national and international reputation. The Department has achieved major recent successes in REF performance, NSS ratings, quality and volume of student recruitment – the successful candidate will accelerate and diversify these performance gains.
You will be an excellent communicator, capable of inspiring staff and students and driving forward the Department’s ambitions and strategic aims. We welcome applications from high calibre applicants in any area of computer and information science.
