Chair, National Centre for Music

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in becoming the founding Chair of the National Centre for Music in the former Royal High School.

Edinburgh’s Royal High School on Calton Hill was completed in 1829 and is the neo-classical masterpiece of architect Thomas Hamilton.  It is unarguably one of Scotland’s most important buildings, standing in a highly prominent position between the City’s Old and New towns.  Despite this importance, since closing its doors to pupils in 1968 it has struggled to find a new purpose.

After a hugely popular public campaign, The Royal High School Preservation Trust proposes to develop a new National Centre for Music (“NCM”) and a new home for Scotland’s foremost specialist music school at the site.  Plans for the physical redevelopment of the buildings are very well advanced, and funding is in hand.  But creating an environment for musical education and performance is only part of the story, as in parallel to the physical work, we are seeking to identify an exceptional individual to lead the creation of an important new national cultural institution.

I’m convinced this is a unique opportunity for the right person to shape what will become one of the most significant parts of Scotland’s cultural landscape, and very much hope you will take the time to find out more.
