Recently voted the best place to live in Scotland, Orkney is the second most northerly of the islands areas, with 17 inhabited islands.  Although geographically remote, Orkney is easily accessible by air or boat and has a cosmopolitan community with immense historical and cultural impact.   OIC is Britain’s smallest local authority, set up in 1974, the council provides all of the council services used by residents of the county. The islands offer – and the Council’s services must sustain – a unique quality of life for all the people who live here.
