Trustees

The Role

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and driven individuals to join Bank of Scotland Foundation as Trustees. Trustees play a vital role, overseeing the management of the Foundation and acting as ambassadors for the Foundation across every sector of society in Scotland.

Over the course of fourteen years, we’ve been Helping Scotland Prosper using an annual donation from Lloyds Banking Group. Our reputation is built on the quality of our grant making and unwavering support for small and medium sized charities. Through our Grants Programmes and Matched Giving Programme for the Group’s colleagues in Scotland we’ve allocated over £43m to over 2,600 charities! As a result, more than 1.5m people have been able to benefit from a diverse range of much needed local services and personal support.

Our funding is distributed to Scotland’s charities effectively and efficiently helping to support people in vulnerable circumstances in some of Scotland’s most deprived communities, addressing areas such as homelessness, debt management, reducing isolation and domestic abuse. In February 2024, our donation from the Group was almost £7m!

We’re seeking Trustees to join our Board and make valuable contributions to our ambitious five-year strategy “Building a Brighter Future for Scotland.”  Through this five-year strategy, the needs, and aspirations of people in vulnerable circumstances will drive our work as we aim to fund, support and champion the small and local charities that work to improve their quality of life. We have a range of unrestricted and multi-year funding programmes available to charities that put people in vulnerable circumstances at the heart of everything they do and through collaboration with the Group, we’re also a source of added value for charities by offering strategic development support and colleague volunteers.

To execute the role successfully potential candidates should have a good knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing local communities and the charities within these communities that may benefit from our funding. As we look to enhance the diversity of our Board, our new Trustees will ideally have a range of skills, experience, and other qualities, both professional and personal, that will help to meet our ambitions. Previous Board/Trustee experience is desirable but not essential, and we encourage applications from all ages and backgrounds.

Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year period and meetings take place quarterly. The Board meeting commitment required is one day per quarter, plus reading and reviewing papers. In addition, occasional engagement activities also require participation from the Trustees, such as the Foundation’s Annual Reception and charity visits to hear first-hand the real difference our funding is making. There is no remuneration for this work, however all necessary travel and accommodation expenses will be fully reimbursed.

We’re an equal opportunity organisation and deeply value diversity within our organisation. We’ll ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process.

It’s been an extraordinary and challenging time due to the pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis, but there is great potential for us to Build a Brighter Future for Scotland through our engaging and innovative work.
